LDD-Feature: Light Power Control (LPC)

Light Power Control (LPC) regulates the optical output power of laser diodes using a layered, cascaded PID control loop. To do this, the photodiode current is used as feedback to adjust the current setpoint of the laser diode driver.

This allows for compensation of changes in laser power, such as those caused by temperature drift or diode aging.

LPC is suitable for applications that require reproducible optical power over time.

Detailed Description

Light Power Control (LPC) is an integrated control feature for laser diode drivers from Meerstetter Engineering. It enables precise and automatic stabilization of the optical power emitted by the laser diode, regardless of factors such as temperature fluctuations, aging effects, or tolerances.

LPC is based on a cascaded PID control loop that is implemented directly in the laser diode driver’s microcontroller. The control system uses the signal from an externally connected monitor photodiode to measure the actual optical power emitted by the laser diode. Deviations from the target power are continuously and automatically corrected by adjusting the laser current - in real time and with high accuracy.

For more information on how it works, please refer to the user manual for the corresponding laser diode driver.

Availability and compatibility:

Light Power Control (LPC) is currently available as a software feature for the LDD-1301, LDD-1303, and LDD-1321 laser diode drivers from Meerstetter Engineering.

Availability depends on the specific device, its hardware configuration, and firmware version.

  • For compatible devices, LPC is available as a software option and can be activated without additional hardware.
  • If the required hardware (e.g., photodiode input) is not present, a hardware upgrade is necessary.
  • Newly purchased devices are LPC-compatible by default.

Would you like to know if your laser diode driver is already compatible or if a hardware modification is required first in order to use Light Power Control (LPC)? Please contact our sales team.

Price model - License handling

Usage and trial period:

Light Power Control (LPC) is unlocked free of charge for the first 150 operating hours on compatible devices and can be tested without restriction during this time. After the trial period ends, the feature can be permanently activated with a license.

Purchase a license:

There are two ways to obtain a license:

  • When purchasing a new device: The desired features are included in the order and are already activated
  • For an existing device: The license is ordered separately and provided via email. Please include the serial number and device type when placing your order.
Activation

The license is provided as a key and loaded into the device using the configuration software.

  • The license is device-specific
  • Only valid license keys can be activated
Notes
  • The software for each laser diode driver is available free of charge.
  • Only optional features, such as LPC, require a license.
